I Guess Some Guys Got It by James Babbs

the sound of empty bottles shifting
when I carry the trash out and
set the bags down at
the far end of my drive
early evening heat thickening the air and
no wind stirs the leaves on
the lonesome tree standing in
the middle of my front yard
I take a quick stroll around
the outside of the house
just checking to make sure
everything still looks okay
nothing but a few spots of bird shit
clinging to the vinyl siding
I find a stray nail in the grass
near the corner of the garage
left behind from last month’s roofing job and
it looks like the young guy down the street
is having another party
he only moved in a few weeks ago
but just about every night I see
cars parked in his driveway and
lined up along the edge of the road
it seems like
there are always beautiful women
with long legs and hair
walking around in the yard
I hear their sweet laughter
drifting through the air
suddenly penetrating the silence
rising up from out of the dark
