I Wasn’t There When by Mikel K

I wasn’t there when
you were chained to a bed
at The State Mental Hospital
screaming out that
somebody had better give you,
“A Fucking Cigarette.”
You weren’t there when
I woke up covered
in blood and puke
after a blacked-out night
in a jail cell.
If your pills work,
then for God’s sake, man, take them.

Mikel K is a poet and memoirist living in Atlanta, Ga. K was voted best Atlanta Poet, the last three years in a row, by readers of Creative Loafing, Atlanta’s weekly newspaper. He has a BS in English with a minor in Journalism from Georgia State University.
