their indifference as love by J. J. Campbell

i think
the cats
are finally
starting to
realize that
i am moving
on and they
aren’t

i was pleased
when i saw
some bird
feathers in
the stall
where i
feed them

maybe their
instincts will
get them
through

though i can’t
promise that
the new owner
won’t have the
county come
pick them up
and take them
to their death

i rest comfortably
knowing i gave
them more than
i give most
humans

as usual for cats

i’ll take their
indifference
as love
